Frequently Asked Questions for Pigment Lesions

What is the difference between the IPL and the Alexandrite laser (755 nm)?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. The IPL is used for sun damaged skin, brown spots and uneven skin tones. It has also been used to increase collagen and improve acne scars when used in addition with the Nd:YAG Facial Rejuvenation treatment. The Alexandrite can be used for the same treatments except it covers a smaller area at a time and the spectrum of light is more direct to a specific target.

What is “non-ablative”?
A “non-ablative” treatment leaves your skin intact and undamaged. The pulse emits light that passes easily through the upper layers of your skin to the unwanted red and brown pigment underneath. The light is absorbed by these pigments and transformed into heat that damages the irregularities. As an additional benefit, your skin’s collagen framework is enhanced and the signs of aging and sun damage, such as brown spots, pigments, red veins and the “blush” or rosacea are diminished.
.
How many treatments can I expect?
It may take several treatments to get the desired results. We say to expect up to 4-6, but in most cases, it can take less and in rare cases, not help at all. You can be treated every 4-6 weeks. Most common pigmented lesions are removed with one or two treatments. If a lesion covers a large area, your physician may want to treat the area in several stages, to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

What does it feel like?
It may feel like a rubber band snap, but the discomfort is usually minimal.

What can I expect after treatment?
Usually within approximately 20 minutes you will see a slightly darker color of the pigment treated. It can take up to 3 weeks for the discoloration to slough off. It may feel like a slight sunburn sensation for a few days following the treatment. In some cases it may look like a superficial burn and in rare cases a blister may appear. It is very important to follow all post treatment instructions and stay out the sun for at least a 4 week period following treatment to avoid irritation to the treated area. If you cannot avoid sun exposure then a sunscreen of no less than 30 SPF should be used.

How do I prepare for the treatments?
It is very important for you to stay out of the sun as unprotected sun exposure could cause discoloration in the area treated. We recommend no unprotected sun exposure 4 weeks prior to and throughout the treatments series. If you cannot avoid sun exposure, you should use a minimum sun screen protection of 30 SPF or higher.

Can the excess pigmentation come back?
Common pigmented lesions do not return. Some birthmarks may return after a period of several months to a year. However, the procedure can be repeated with similar results.
